Subsequent to the IWA PIA Bronze Medal Award for Category: Breakthroughs in Research and Development in September 2018, SANI technology team won the prize again in April 2019: The Golden Prize of 2018 Hong Kong Green Innovation Award, which is the highest recognition in Green innovation in Hong Kong.
As Hong Kong’s homegrown novel wastewater treatment technology, this technology is an energy-efficient and low carbon footprint technology that was developed from making use of sulfate in sewage as electron carrier for integrating anaerobic, heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass / reactions together toward minimal sludge production. Sewage sulfate originates from Hong Kong’s world unique water-saving practice, namely seawater for toilet flushing.
SANI technology was successfully demonstrated at 1000 m3/d in Hong Kong through great supports from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Drainage Services Department and Innovation and Technology Commission. Over 250 days, biological sludge production was minimized by 70%, SANI technology has been introduced to overseas and recognized by international experts. Prof. Guanghao CHEN expressed that this is an original wastewater treatment technology that serves not only Hong Kong, but also the whole world.
