To meet the future challenges and needs of environmental protection and sustainable development, the Branch will conduct research in 18 core areas grouped under five directions:

(1) Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technology
  i) Carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen cycle-based novel wastewater treatment technology: the SANI process
ii) A low-cost self-forming dynamic membrane bioreactor (SFDMBR)
iii) A granulation process for wastewater treatment

(2) Advanced Water Treatment Technology
iv) Surfactant-modified iron-oxide-coated sand for natural organic matters (NOM) removal
  v) Fractal structure of aggregates in water and their coagulation kinetics
vi) Immobilization and preparation of photocatalysts

(3) Environmental Pollution Bioremediation and Treatment
  vii) Sulfide sediments treatment
  viii) Anaerobic digestion
ix) Bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soil
  x) Thermal treatment of heavy metals
xi) Migration of perfluorochemicals in the environment
xii) Lead recovery (Pb) from waste cathode-ray tube (CRT) glasses

(4) SMART Municipal Water Supply and Waste Treatment System
xiii) The triple water system (TWS)
xiv) A urine separation and treatment system
xv) Total municipal organic waste management by integrating food waste disposal and sewage treatment (MOW-FAST)

(5) Environmental Impact Evaluation
xvi) Environmental evaluation of trace metals and persistent organic pollutants
xvii) Anthropogenic impacts on marine microbial communities
xviii) Microbial source tracking of fecal pollution
